Why listicles get cited by AI search — answer shape, not list bias

Listicles dominate AI citations for a mechanical reason, not a universal “list bias”. Peec’s reranker guide (full guide, Aug 2026) explains: a good “best AEO tools” listicle names several entities, covers several attributes, answers comparison sub-queries, and contains passages that satisfy multiple fan-out queries at once — and it has the exact answer shape a selection query requests: a shortlist. The same logic predicts a definition wins “what is X” and ordered steps win “how to” — the principle is intent-to-answer-shape alignment, not “turn every page into a list”.
