AI Overviews by query intent — commercial queries trigger it too
Peec’s 500,000-prompt study (Apr 2026) — AI Overviews appeared for 88.5% of bottom-of-funnel commercial prompts, above the 87% average, and in 93–97% of queries with a clear intent pattern.
Google AI Overviews is not reserved for informational queries — it appears across the whole funnel. Peec classified 500,000 prompts (April 13–20, 2026) by funnel stage (full study) and found decision-stage, bottom-of-funnel prompts trigger AI Overviews 88.5% of the time — higher than the 87% average. Queries like “best CRM for small business” or “Salesforce vs HubSpot” get AI Overview answers that recommend some brands and leave others out.
By query type (Google’s eight internal categories, per Mark Williams-Cook’s research): AI Overviews appears in 93–97% of queries with a clear linguistic intent pattern — short fact, yes/no, instruction, definition, reason, comparison, and consequence — with the exact category barely changing the rate. The one outlier is the vague “Other” bucket at 67%. When Google can read a clear intent, it almost always serves an AI Overview.
