Query length strongly predicts whether Google serves an AI Overview. Splitting 500,000 prompts by word count (April 13–20, 2026, full study), Peec found the rate climbs with nearly every added word:
  • 2 words (“car insurance”): 64.6%
  • 5 words: 78.5%
  • 6–7 words: 84.2%
  • 8–10 words: 87.7%
  • 11–15 words: 89.1% (peak)
  • 15+ words: plateau between 87% and 91%
That is a 25-percentage-point swing between the shortest and longest queries. One-word queries are an oddity at almost 80% — even “marketing” got an AI Overview. Average across all lengths: 87% (April 2026 data). Even keyword-style two-word queries see AI Overviews in nearly two of three searches, so short queries do not escape it. Overall coverage and growth are in How often AI Overviews appears; intent-level rates in AI Overviews by query intent.
