A Google ranking loss carries over into AI search visibility. Peec’s analysis (full article, Feb 2026) traces the chain using the Grokipedia case: when Grokipedia lost Google visibility in late January/early February 2026, Malte Landwehr (Peec) tracked ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, and AI Overviews all reducing Grokipedia citations at exactly the same time. Why one Google penalty spreads everywhere (Feb 2026 analysis):
  • AI Overviews & AI Mode: Google’s own AI features cite lower-ranked pages less often.
  • ChatGPT: evidence shows it uses Google Search extensively, including Google Shopping for product recommendations.
  • Grok: also uses Google Search.
LLMs ground their answers through search engines, so a site removed or demoted in Google (and Bing) loses the retrieval layer AI answers are built on. The most common self-inflicted cause of such drops is publishing low-quality AI content at scale — see The real risk of AI-generated content. Note the nuance for ChatGPT specifically: its Deep Research retrieval runs on Bing, making Bing its own lever — see How Deep Research reads your site.
